Why does my task list keep growing?

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

This is a question I’ve been asking myself for the last year or so, and I’m sure I’m not the only person who has a task list that never seems to get smaller. I’ve tweaked my system, moving from digital to paper and back to digital; I’ve incoporated new ideas from Getting Things Done and Do it tomorrow, but the list keeps growing. So at the start of 2008 I decided to do some analysis so I could understand the nature of my incoming tasks and hopefully develop a system that means I can work through my task list.

If you are interested in reading my analysis you can find it over at Productivity in Context. Thank you Stephen for inviting me to write my first guest post.

So where has my feed gone?

Apparently the rss feed for my blog has not been working since the end of May, and despite subscribing to it twice I didn’t notice, so thank you Catherine for telling me.

I can think of a couple of reasons why it is not working; the upgrade to Wordpress 2.5 or the relevant plugin is out of date.  As I like to look for the easy solution I have upgraded the plugin and I’m hoping this will solve the problem.  If not then I may be looking for some assistance.

As it happens I have not actually posted much since the feed went down so you have not missed much, but in case you want to look back, here are the missing posts

In the last month (May 2008)

Things didn’t really pick up in reference to my post writing in the last month as I had anticipated.  I wrote a grand total of 0 posts, not very impressive.  I have a long list of posts that I want to write and my organisation system is going through several changes at the moment so I have a lot to say, I just need to improve my systems so I can get them out of my head and on to the screen.

However, despite my lack of communication the number of subscribes has not varied greatly and is currently 173 (higher than my last update in February), so thank you readers for sticking with me.

Making progress? March 2008

March has been strange a month because I’ve been on leave for two weeks and it is the last month of my company’s financial year so I’ve fluctuated between relaxation and being very busy. Plus, I think the hours I’ve been working over the last few months has finally got to me as I feel exhausted and I’m struggling to do much outside of the office, hence the lack of posts recently (I had intended do a lot of writing while I was in Japan, however their public transport system is so efficient that I did not find the time).

Goals - again, I have not progressed identifying my goals in the last month. I have a very first draft and I’m thinking of just posting it so that I start progressing this area again.

In the last month (January 2008)

Its been a mixed month.  I decided it was time to get more serious with my blog so I developed an editorial calendar to help me plan my posts, plus I started writing posts first thing in the morning. However, in the past weeks things have been very busy at work where I have either been travelling or I have been working over 11 hour days. This has obviously impacted my energy levels as well as the time available for my blog; I am looking to rectify this at the moment.

In the last month I passed 2000 visits to my blog, an increase of almost 40% on the previous month. Plus the subscribers to my feed has increased past 150 with a new high of 162.

In the last month (December 2007)

The last month has included Christmas, New Year and going back to work after two weeks on leave.  It has certainly been a varied time, but through this I have managed to pick up the number of posts I’ve written.  We still don’t have wireless internet at home, so unfortunately I am not making full use of my new laptop, but I can sort of understand why my husband  may be worried that I could spend even more time on the computer than I do now!

In the last month I have had over 1,550 visits to my blog (and over 3,500) page views and I have also gone over 130 subscribers, with a new high of 138.

The most popular posts were:

In the last month (November 2007)

Unfortunately I didn’t pick up the writing on my blog last month as I expected. I have a lot of ideas I want to write about, but unfortunately finding the time is the problem, and although I have been on leave for a week I have unfortunately needed to do some work as well as the usual festive activities. However, I am currently writing this post lying on my parents in law sofa on my new laptop. Yes, my husband bought me a laptop for my birthday and I am hoping it is going to make it easier for me to write posts both when I’m at home, but particularly when I’m visiting other people. At the moment though, we don’t have wireless internet at home so I have still been using my desktop.

In the last month (October 2007)

During October I had a slight disagreement with my blog as it appeared to not like my posts and this was followed by a busy time at work. Together this meant my posting rate dropped significantly (only three posts in November), however interestingly November was one of my largest monthly earnings from Google Adsense. My subscribers has stayed consistently over 100 despite this lack of posting, but, to be expected, the number of comments has fallen.

The most interesting search terms that found my site during October/November were

  • Christmas post it notes
  • globalisation of ebay
  • house extension blog
  • kitchen wallpaper
  • mixed up chameleon project
  • wallpaper imagine

Again I would like to thank Rosemary at Daily PlanIt as my largest referrer during October /November, particularly as they are good quality referrals reading over 3 pages on my site.
