Can you only call it a success if you complete the plan? My plan for the weekend was to clean the house using a process I’d found through Pinterest. My checklist suggests I didn’t get very far, but I actually see the weekend as a success.
The image doesn’t actually tell the full story, and not just because I forgot to tick wiping the kitchen counters and cabinets. We hadn’t considered the organisation of the pantry cupboard since unpacking in February so almost everything was moved to achieve a more useful arrangement; I also mopped the kitchen floor. As part of the next step, clean bathrooms, I included the utility room because it contains a sink and toilet, and was a bathroom before we moved in (the previous owners took the bath). This should have been a quick dust and wipe, but we haven’t paid much attention to the room so it had become a bit of a dumping ground, the window sills were cluttered and one corner had been overtaken by plastic bags. All this had to be sorted before I could mop the floor and class the room as finished. I also cleaned the ensuite and did four loads of washing. I found it motivating to have a process to follow, how do you motivate yourself for cleaning.Â
It didn’t occur to me to take before pictures, but I’m still very impressed with the after pictures; if you think the rooms look a bit shabby remember the property was used as a care home for 20 years. As a slight tangent, the utility room has a south facing window over looking the back garden, it is opposite the kitchen and next to the dining room. We will be making the kitchen bigger and one idea is to knock it in to the utility room, another idea is to move the kitchen to the back of the house by knocking the utility room into the dining room. We haven’t decided what we’ll do yet, but this photograph confirms to me the room is wasted as a utility room.
I had intended to clean the bathroom as well, but we had a power cut for most of Sunday evening; handy the house came with an emergency lighting system!
