9 reasons why it is important to finish tasks

I’m a big fan of “little and often” because it helps to reduce the resistance associated with big tasks and means you don’t work on one task to the exclusion of other tasks. However, I have realised recently that my task list is not getting shorter because I work on a task, cross it off and then add it on to the end of the list; if I want to reduce the length of my task list I need to actually complete some of the tasks. The oldest two outstanding tasks I can think of are a dress I was making for a wedding in 2006 and the thank you cards from when my daughter was born; she is now 3 and I’ve had a second baby!

I’ve been thinking about this over the last few weeks and compiled a list of reasons why it is important to finish tasks. In the hope that I’m not the only person with outstanding tasks I’m sharing the list to inspire you to finish tasks.

It is important to finish tasks:

  • so you don’t waste time working out where you were

Life lesson from losing my blog for a week

I’ve been wanting to change my hosting company for some time and after a year or so, I eventually signed up with a new hosting company, 5quid host.

However, I didn’t move my blog. The main reasons were the impact of moving the url away from my ISP and thinking it would be better to move this blog when I’d decided on its own domain. But the biggest reason was procrastination; it appeared to be such a big task, so instead I started planning.

Then life gave me a wake up call. My ISP’s server went down. Unfortunately as the engineers looked into it, they discovered bigger problems and ended up upgrading the servers with a different version of php and once they were running again, my blog was no longer accessible. I tried a few tweaks, but still nothing.

I had two options. Get my ISP working, or finally move everything to my new host. I decided it made most sense to spend the time moving. It isn’t something I’ve done before, but I had a vague idea of what to do so off I started. I had some errors, warning messages and moments when I almost gave up and started begging people to help me. However, after two days my site is workiGoogle analytics showing impact of server going downng again, but its had its impact.

Losing technology and losing my way

Studland beachI’ve had a few problems recently. The most noticeable being the loss of my computer. The battery stopped charging and only occasionally registered the power supply. One theory is this may have been due to my daughter’s fascination with laptops; she had a tendency to pull out of the charging cable and chew on it. I now have a new 17″ latoptop, but have had to reinstall programmes and transfer files which has taken a long time (in fact I’m not quite there). This was soon after followed by a holiday where the internet connection wasn’t working. All this loss of technology, along with some illness, has meant I’ve lost my way in terms of productivity, and unfortunately my blog is one of the things to suffer

During the last few months, my approach to getting things done has been very much based on what is urgent or what is on my mind, so not as productive as using my AutoFocus list. It has also involved using paper so I now have several lists and blog posts I’ve started at different times that I need to locate.

Making progress? July 2007

Kate climbingI chose to start this blog to record my path to a simpler, happier and more productive life, however I seem to have forgotten this in the excitement of starting to write publicly for the first time. I have decided I need more structure in my life to help me work towards where I want to be, plus I suspect this blog would benefit from a bit more structure.

I am intending to review my personal progress at the end of each month and discuss how I’m doing and perhaps ask for help if I’m struggling. I know I already have my posts about the wheel of life, but at the moment I see these as a separate topic, but maybe I will combine in the future. I also have my posts reviewing what happened in the previous month, but I intend to leave them as a review of my blogging progress.

Can I be organised on my own?

dinghy sailsThe husband is away this weekend, sailing. I am, therefore, planning to get lots of things done from my to do list, as well as the chores such as food shopping and clothes washing.

However I am curious whether I will be able to do this, or whether the luxury of having the house to myself will mean I wallow into a weekend of sitting watching television or aimlessly browsing the internet.

I am hopeful that amongst other things I will find the motivation to read, write post for this blog and do some dressmaking. As a measure of my (hopeful) success I will keep a list of my achievements which I will share on Sunday evening or Monday.

Learning from burning buns

How to be a domestic goddess
I have a team meeting this week, so decided to prepare some muffins for the team to eat as an incentive to attend; especially as the meeting is booked in for an hour longer than normal because there is a video conference to another team, on top of the usual meeting.

I decided to make peanut butter and snicker muffins, from Nigella Lawson’s How to be a domestic goddess because they are a favourite with my husband as well as some team members
I have used this recipe a lot; so why did I burn them this time?

As my copy of the book is hardback, it is hard to use while cooking, and because I don’t want to get cake mixture on the book, I have copied the recipe on to a bit of scrap paper that I pull out each time I use it. From experience I know our oven is hotter than expected so I reduced the temperature by 30 degrees and the time by 10 minutes.

So what went wrong?
