We’re four weeks into lockdown in the UK, with at least another three weeks to come of the current restrictions. And we don’t know what reduced restrictions will mean. Will the schools reopen, will businesses like shops reopen? I don’t know the answers, and I don’t think anyone does. It all depends on the numbers or until there is a vaccination.
So I’m not thinking about when this will end. I’m concentrating on the good things from us all being at home. In an ideal world I’d have a great balance between spending time on work, with the children and doing things for me. Unfortunately a lot of tasks were generated by my work site closing so the balance for the first few weeks was definitely towards work. I’ve spent most of the remaining time supporting the children and working on the house, so we all have somewhere to work. However, I’m confident that things are now moving towards the balance I want.
I am documenting at least one positive from each day on Instagram and Facebook using the hashtag #socialdistancingpostivity. Some of my highlights from the last three weeks are:
- The children creating new ways to entertain themselves
- I’m doing more exercise
- We have moved into our new study space and the children have claimed the old study and renamed it the den
- B discovering she enjoys editing videos, after creating one as part of her school work
- Making more time to play board games
- Seeing the strong bond between B and M
- Clearing out weeds and planting flower seeds
- Virtual cubs is encouraging M to work on badges and do a camp in the back garden
- Sun
- Bluebells
- Family time watching films snuggled on the sofa
What have you found positive about social distancing? Why don’t you share them online using the #socialdistancingpositivity hashtag and help encourage each other to see the best in the situation.
I see more blogging than usual too! I have to admit I’ve done less exercise than normal. Started okayish with a bit of tennis and skipping with N, but that’s fallen by the wayside. 3 dog walks last week when the OH wasn’t around and I was on leave, but N usually goes out with the OH for the walks while I work so I’ve not really been out, and when N’s at home he doesn’t want to go outside because he’s been out most of the afternoon. I did find a local ballroom teacher doing a facebook live class yesterday so I might see if I can find more to join/sign up to, even if I can’t go to classes once they’re all open again.
Great news that you found some online ballroom dance classes, have you been attending? My children are really enjoying their online dance classes. I did do one adult dance class, but I’m sticking to my Les Mills on Demand which I can do when I want.
Well it’s now 2oth May 2020 – Eight weeks into lockdown here in the UK.
Like you Kate, I never focussed on ‘when’ it would end – instead I focussed on taking the opportunity to use the isolation to ‘know’ that I wouldn’t be called to tend to other peoples’ fires so to speak.
I have honestly enjoyed the time away from the masses to practice my mindfulness more intently and read much, much more – not just 15 minutes or so before nodding off at night.
Apart from worrying about the health and wellfare of others, my social distancing experience has been a positive journey of re self-discovery.
I’m glad you’re seeing the positive in the lockdown Barry. You are right that getting away other people creates a slower pace of life. I’ve achieved lots of sorting of things so far, but not as much as reading as I’d have liked. But that will come.
Yes, that never ending abyss called ‘sorting’ lol – I know it well. It’s funny how we never quite seem to have enought time to do the things we want, (even in lockdown). Anyway, you’re absolutely correct – when the time is right you’ll find/make the time to read more. Stay safe. God Bless.
And the same to you.
