Ask advice: Blog hosting (and other blog tips)

There comes a time when you have to accept that cheap is not always good and in terms of my hosting it is currently free as it is provided by the ISP (plus.net) as a bonus to the broadband package.  It has been great as it has enabled me to try out blogging with WordPress. However I think the time has come to take my blog more seriously.

I have been writing regularly for over six months so have proved this is not a passing fad and with my increasing readership I think it is time I spent some money. I am planning on moving my hosting to a specific hosting company as the current connection to the database is getting increasing erratic (in fact almost to prove a point, the servers went down yesterday for several hoursas I was writing this post).

However, I don’t know which company to move to, so I am looking for suggestions on good hosting companies.  Obviously I want to be able to host WordPress and I would like to host more than one domain name.  Please remember I am based in the UK in case that prevents me going with an overseas company.

I am also planning to change my theme to make it more personal and suitable for the site. I could have spent the time doing this several months but as I don’t know PHP (yet) it would have taken a long time and I decided it would be more effective to spend the time writing posts. However now I am understanding WordPress better and I am writing regularly I feel I can spend some time to improve the look of my blog.

So now I am starting to take my blog more serious, do you have any tips of other things I should be considering to improve?

About Kate Davis

I'm a working mum of two children, and I'm keen to make the most of what is important to me. This starts by capturing information whether it is a photograph or a task list. I love a process and try to find the most efficient method of doing things from organising photographs to planning a house renovation. I believe everything benefits from being simpler.

Hi there Kate. I’ve been using A2 Hosting, and so far they have been excellent. I use WordPress and they support it well and I have had no problems with the site, even though I got well out of my depth with PHP programming at one point!

By the way I am also in process of switching hosts. I’ve been using Netfirms Business Plan, they really leave a lot to be desired (to be nice). I am switching to Blue Host upon the recommendation of many of my more Techie friends.

A new look

[…] If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting! It is widely recognised that content is the most important aspect of a blog, however it is the look that is first noticed; and just like with people, first impressions do count. So unless all your readers use a feed reader they will gain thoughts about your site from the first few moments of visiting. Now I have to admit I didn’t really like my theme, but stuck with it until I could develop a new one; I just didn’t think it would take… Read more »

Welcome

I'm a working mum of two children, and I believe everything benefits from being simpler. Although I'm not as good as I'd like at achieving simplification. I often get caught up on writing lists or planning the most efficient method of achieving things instead. Read More…
