Link to Amazon I found this book difficult to get into at first, but after about 70 pages I was gripped. But then suddenly about half way through the book I realised I didn’t like the main character Beatrice Lacey and really didn’t care about what happened to her or the Wideacre estate that she was so concerned with so I stopped. I sympathised with her situation, a woman who loves her home but which Continue Reading …
The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith – book review
I did enjoy The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency*, but to be honest if I had lost the book mid-read I probably wouldn’t have bothered to buy it again. The style of the book is one that I would usually not like. It jumps from topic to topic and apart from seeing if Precious Ramotswe’s detective agency survives there isn’t much of a main theme to the book; although there is a nice ending. However Continue Reading …
In the last month (June)
The last month has been a quieter month for me between a combination of being away from home and being ill. I still wrote several posts, but I need to learn to be a bit slicker with my writing so I can cover the days when I’m not able to sit in front of my PC. However, I still received eight comments on my posts, so maybe it wasn’t a quiet month after all because Continue Reading …
Stark by Ben Elton book review
Link to Amazon I am still surprised that I did not enjoy this books as I enjoy Ben Elton as a comedian and thought ‘Dead Famous‘ was a great read.I thought the style was trying to be like Douglas Adams or Terry Pratchett, but just seemed forced. I got ~80 pages in to the book before giving up, although I gave it a second go by jumping into the middle of the book to see Continue Reading …
Something you may not know about me – I love reading
Reading has been an important part of my life since I was a child. I didn’t go any where without a book (or several books). For instance, in the photograph, we are at a hotel in the Lake District to have lunch with my grandparents and I couldn’t put down my book for the duration of the picture (sorry for the poor quality, it is a scan of a poor quality print, but it is Continue Reading …
Deception on his mind by Elizabeth George – Book review
Link toAmazon I found myself first interested in Elizabeth George’s books after watching the Inspector Lyndley Mysteries on TV. I have found the books I’ve read as enjoyable as the series if not more so because the books contain so much more detail. In this book the characters are really well written and you can imagine the community of the run down seaside town where racial tensions are high. There are also the interactions between Continue Reading …
Life of Pi by Yann Martel – book review
Link to Amazon This isn’t my usual type of book, but I persisted with it because it was lent to me by a friend who really enjoyed it. I soon found myself engrossed wanting firstly for Pi to be shipwrecked (as it was the only thing I knew about the book from the back of the book)and secondly rescued. It was also easy to fit the reading in around everything else because it has short Continue Reading …
My thoughts on today’s news on climate change
There were two interesting news items on the breakfast news this morning about climate change; obviously the Live Earth concerts and also the plan to educate UK children about climate change. News items on environmental stories always interest me as an environmental consultant and even though I don’t work on the energy side these two stories did get me thinking, so I thought I would share my thoughts with you. Educating children about global warming Continue Reading …
As exciting as watching the hits on my blog live …
… well I have to admit I found it exciting last night. I recently installed a new plugin, Live, which enables you to see the hits on your blog as they happen, including their location on the blog and where they originated. It has been interesting to look at it now and again, but last night I received a lot of traffic from stumbleupon for my post, Is organisation transferable? which caused some exciting peaks Continue Reading …
In the last month (May)
Last month was an exciting month for me. In my review of April I said I was looking forward to my first comment, so thank you Corrie who wrote it, but also to @Stephen and Goal Setting College, in total I received eight comments. So now I’ve received my first comment, what else is there to achieve? Ah yes, a working blog. After publishing a post on how exercise would benefit me, my blog disappeared Continue Reading …
