You probably know that I love reading; I love expanding my knowledge and getting lost in a story. I want my children to love reading as well. It will help them at school and I hope inspire their imaginations. Encouraging children to read Here are my suggestions to encourage your children to read. I’m not involved in education so these are based on what well-informed people have recommended to me. Read in front of your children Continue Reading …
This is the year I’ve stopped reading
I love reading. In fact I love reading too much and when I start a good book it takes over everything. I skimp on all my other activities so I can fit in more reading time. I’ve kept a log in one place or another of the books I’ve read since 2005 so I know I tend to read between 50 and 60 books a year; put simply that is one book a week. The Continue Reading …
Ask Advice: How to productively use book social media sites
Social media has become part of every day web use for most people, whether it is connecting to friends, playing games or sharing photographs. I believe social media should either be fun or useful, but I’m struggling to use book sites productively. I love books and I love book websites, but it often feels that I’m spending time duplicating activities or not making the most of the sites, for example using forums. My favourite sites Continue Reading …
Why I didn’t choose an Amazon Kindle
There are some products that become linked to a particular brand name, in some cases the brand replaces the generic term e.g. Blu-tac, Sellotape, Biro. This appears to be occurring in the electronics market with people wanting to buy Ipods instead of digital music player, Iphones instead of smart phone and more recently Kindles instead of ebook readers. I don’t follow this trend and have a Creative mp3 player, HTC Android smart phone and Sony Continue Reading …
Ask advice – which ebook reader?
UPDATE: I bought a Sony Touch, read my thoughts after six months. An ebook reader is the latest gadget I want and I’ve been offered one for my upcoming birthday; I had the same offer last year and turned it down, as I didn’t think it was worth purchasing any of the available models, but I’m hoping it is different this year.Part of me wonders if I’m just after a new toy, however as I’ve Continue Reading …
My favourite books of 2008
My notes suggest I read 50 books in 2008 (13 fewer than 200) although like a lot of things towards the end of the year I let my notes slip so it is possible I’ve missed a few books. Comparing the list to my favourites books of 2007 there are a couple of things I notice; the books fall into a wider range of genres (not just fantasy), and there are several books that are Continue Reading …
My favourite books of 2007
I am still working towards my goal of reading 75 books in a year; in 2007 I made it to 63 books, an average of over 5 a month, which I think is an impressive amount. I’ve read 6 books during January and February 2008 a drop in the average to 3 books a month. As I’ve been busy, I’ve wanted to re-read books so I don’t need to think too hard as I read Continue Reading …
Where to get free personalised book recommendations
There are many methods of choosing books, but recommendations has been a popular method for a long time. However there are limitations with recommendations because they usually only consider one book and are based on one person’s thoughts so it is easy to be ‘misled’. However through interactive sites, the web is able to provide personalised recommendations based on your own reading habits. Here are some of my favourite places to get book recommendations Amazon Continue Reading …

The First Rider’s Call by Kristen Britain – book review
Link to Amazon This is the sequel to The Green Rider which I really enjoyed and wanted to read the sequel as soon as I discovered it and luckily was able to request this copy through bookmooch . The story again follows Karigan G’ladheon, two years after the first book. The foundation of the story is the dark magic seeping into Sacoridia through the cracks in the D’yer Wall causing strange things to happen to Continue Reading …
