So your answers to my reader survey have been interesting reading; thank you to everyone who responded. I’m certainly feeling a bit challenged by some of the results and directions you’d like me to go.
Get more personal
Your favourite post types are How tos / Tutorials and Personal. Both of these are challenging for me as I don’t do many things that immediately make me think that would make a good tutorial and I don’t write many personal posts. Obviously, I write personal posts because I write about our house and my journals, but I don’t write in details about my personal thoughts very often. I’ve partly written two posts that are more personal than normal, but I haven’t felt the desire to actually finish and publish them. This is definitely an area for me to work on, and I’m trying to write less formally in this post. What do you think, have I achieved a more personal style?
I have some posts planned about my journals and bullet journal which will hopefully be of interest to those of you who said you wanted more posts on writing. I absolutely love that someone wants me to write about wine more often; it is a subject I would love to know more about, but until then or I go on another event I don’t think the posts would be very informative. I suppose one option would be to share pictures of the different wine I’ve drunk that week …?
Write more often
You’ve probably noticed that I haven’t published many posts recently. Before I started work I was publishing 6 or 7 posts a month, but in March I managed 3 and April it dropped to 2 (and so far this month it is just 1). However, I need to find a way to spend more time on writing because you all said you wanted me to continue with a similar number a month, or to increase the number of posts.
I’d thought I maybe to keep the posting frequency up without doing the writing myself by including posts about other people such as interviews about their journals, or running work together projects, however the answer was very clear that the majority of you don’t want these type of posts. I guess I should be pleased that you want to hear from me, but combined with the fact that half of you are visiting the site more frequently than I’m publishing at the moment, I’m feeling the weight of your expectations; and I hope I’m up to the challenge.
More writing and travel
The fact that you want more posts about writing is not a big surprise considering my most popular posts are about journal writing, but I have to admit it was a big surprise that the second most popular topic is travel. In nine years I’ve only written five travel posts. I’m a bit perplexed about what to do for this topic as my travel is usually limited to around Oxfordshire, Dorset and a few trips to London for conferences. I would love to hear what type of travel posts you’d like to read.
And now a warning. Although the home & garden topic wasn’t one of the most popular topics, I hope I’ll be writing more posts about our house renovation, as we may start the serious tasks later in the year.
Use other platforms
Well the results for platforms is just a little confusing. What do you make of these results?
- The platform you use the most is Facebook, followed jointly by Twitter and Instagram
- You want to see me engaging more on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube
- The most common method for finding out about new posts is through Twitter
I have to admit I was surprised that more people would like to see me on Snapchat than on Periscope. In fact no one voted for Periscope which is a shame because I like the platform, maybe I should try Facebook Live. I’ve been trying Snapchat for a few weeks so if you want to follow me on there search for katedarktea.
I’m not about to rush into getting more active on all these platforms as I want to concentrate on writing blog posts, but I will aim to start posting more frequently on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. I do struggle for what to post on Facebook and Instagram so I guess I’ll post a few things and see what is the most popular, so please go a long and like and comment on my posts. I’ve already made a start with a different style of post on Facebook, what do you think, do you like this type of post?
Thank you again, to everyone who completed the survey, I really appreciate the time you took to share your thoughts, and I hope I can pay you back by providing more content on topics you want to read and on the platforms you want to use.
And finally, it seems most of you don’t know I have a newsletter that goes out twice a month, so if you’d like to sign up to receive a summary of recently published posts here and on social media then sign up now.
