These posts celebrate completed tasks that have been on my to do list for a long time, and analyse why they were not completed earlier.
Textured crochet blanket
At a few months old it was clear M liked to snuggle into blankets and when he started showing a fascination with different textures I decided to make him a crochet blanket using wools of different textures. I found a free pattern on Ravelery, but I concentrated so hard on getting different textures that the colours didn’t fit the pattern, so I changed it to a graduated diagonal pattern. This turned out to be a benefit because I only had to do 3 squares with the mini marshmallow wool which I found difficult to use.
The blanket is made of granny squares (first time I’ve done them), except for the mini marshmallow wool which are squares made from double crochet. I’ve sewn the squares together and created a border with three rows of double crochet with the wonderfully soft King Cole cuddles. As I’ve used wools of different textures the blanket has ended up a bit uneven, but I think that just adds to the homemade charm; a bit like my taggy blankets.
So far M has shown no interest in the blanket and even threw it off my lap several times when I was working on the border; probably because in the year I’ve taken to finish it he chose another blanket as his favourite. I don’t mind though because his special blanket was knitted by his great granny and he gets such intense joy from it.
B was very intrigued watching me finish the blanket and kept asking if she can have it, so I took to her the wool shop. She has chosen her own wool and pattern and I’ve already started making her a crochet blanket.
The details
Task: | crochet blanket using different textured wool |
Why complete it: | gift for my baby son who likes blankets and textures |
Duration to complete: | 1 year |
What needed to do: |
|
What caused delay: | the mini marshmallow wool, I found this really difficult to crochet with and stopped with two squares to go |
Benefits of completing |
|
Improvements | Keep the crochet in the lounge because it is easy to pick up while watching television and don’t use lumpy wools in future. |
I’m encouraging him to like the blanket, by putting it on him as he sleeps! His favourite blanket is the multicoloured one under his head.
Quite a labour of love. It looks great, well done. I’m sure he will come to love it over time and if he doesn’t you have a great story to guilt trip him with in his teens and later years…Mummy spent a year making a blanket for you ….
