We often hear about the health benefits of eating porridge; filling you up and slowly releasing energy throughout the day and is very popular in our house with my three year old son happy to eat two or three bowls for breakfast, when we give him the chance.
However, as well as helping people last through to lunch here, porridge is also helping bring about #lastingchange in Kenya through the Omega Foundation, with support from Red Nose Day. The project, Power Porridge, helps women, who have lost their husbands and are living with HIV, to improve their nutritional intake enabling them to take life saving Ant-Retroviral drugs. The money raised by Red Nose Day helped provide one group of women, with the start up funds needed to buy ingredients and tools which they then used to make a very special porridge. As more women become stronger the group became larger and they have begun to make more porridge to give to other women in the community who are desperately ill. The group even manage to sell a small amount to pay for their children’s school fees and medical bills.
Their porridge contains more than just milled porridge oats and water, additional ingredients are added to increase the nutritional value of the porridge including soya (protein) and crushed up egg shells (zinc and calcium) mixed into a drink.
Don’t forget to visit Red Nose Day website to find out what is happening in March, and keep in touch with the Team Honk bloggers.
I’ve loved seeing all the Team Honk #lastingchange social postcards, it’ll help me thinking of these people when I’m doing the 6 hour danceathon in March!
I agree it was great to read about the projects Team Honk went to visit, and to see #lastingchange trending on Twitter. Good luck with your dancing, I’m sure it will be great fun.
